Welcome to Summer!
Hello Kilmer Families!
Here you will find the summer math books and the BPS summer math calendars for your student. The books and/or calendar for your grade level could be completed and returned to your student's new teacher on the first day of school.
Please note: BPS sends out the Summer Math Calendars. They have been added here for your convenience and can be found as the first listing at each grade level. There is no calendar for students entering K1 or K2. The books are meant as a supplement.
To get your books, click on the links below and print out the pages.
There should be enough pages for your child to complete approximately one page per day. Some will do more, some will do less. Please do what you think is appropriate for your child.
Please resist the temptation to complete books for higher grade levels. We will not be changing these books from year to year and wish to avoid having a student complete a book twice. Using lower grade level books as a review if needed is however, encouraged.
Looking for a challenge? Check Mrs. Simpson's Math blog: www.mathcafeboston.blogspot.com There are links on the right to many fun online games. She will also be updating with links to some more challenging work in a few weeks!
Until then, enjoy the summer and we look forward to working with you and your child in September!
Students entering K1 could do a lot of counting.
Counting is a very important first step in understanding quantity and number. Have them count their fingers, count the number of pretzels in their snack, count the number of wheels on the car, count, count, count! This chart nicely outlines the progression of ideas in young children and shows the importance of counting.
Measuring begins in K1. To practice, students can measure everyday objects with paperclips, crayons, or anything you have on hand.
Students could also start to recognize and name simple shapes; squares, circles, triangles and rectangles. Point these shapes out when you come across them in the world. Noticing that the refrigerator is shaped like a rectangle, or that the ice-cream cone that they drew is a triangle, is a great first step!
Lastly, students can begin to practice writing their numbers and could complete:
Number Writing Practice Pages
